As the founder of LeatherKart, I’ve had countless conversations with customers about leather, sustainability, ethics, and conscious consumption. Some people openly ask difficult questions about the leather industry, while others quietly wonder whether it is possible to care deeply for animals and still appreciate genuine leather products.
Honestly, I think it’s a fair question.
This article is not about convincing anyone what to believe. It is simply my personal perspective after spending years working within the leather industry and speaking with customers from all walks of life.
One thing I have realised over time is that the conversation around leather is often much more complex than social media makes it seem.
The Reality Most People Don’t Talk About
Most leather used around the world is actually a by-product of the food industry. In simple terms, animals are generally not raised only for leather. Leather exists because meat consumption exists on a massive global scale.
Now, whether someone chooses to consume animal products or not is a deeply personal decision, and I genuinely respect every individual’s choice.
But from my perspective, if animals are already part of the food supply chain, then using the hide responsibly rather than discarding it entirely can actually reduce waste. That is one of the reasons leather has existed across cultures and civilisations for centuries.
Fast Fashion Has Created Another Problem
One thing that genuinely concerns me today is how disposable modern fashion has become.
Many synthetic bags and shoes are designed to last only a short period before being thrown away and replaced. A lot of these materials are petroleum-based plastics that eventually end up in landfill and contribute to long-term environmental damage.
I have personally seen people use a genuine leather bag for 10 years or more while replacing synthetic alternatives every year or two.
So perhaps the conversation should become larger than simply “leather versus non-leather.”
The real discussion should also include:
- durability
- repairability
- waste reduction
- overconsumption
- environmental impact over time
A product that lasts for years often creates far less waste than products designed to be temporary.
Why I Personally Respect Genuine Leather Craftsmanship
One reason I fell in love with leather products is because they age with character.
A good leather bag develops marks, softness, texture, and personality over time. It becomes part of someone’s life journey — work, travel, memories, everyday routines.
I still own one of my very first leather bags from years ago. It has travelled with me through business meetings, airports, road trips, and everyday life. The leather has aged beautifully over time, and honestly, that experience shaped how I think about longevity and responsible consumption.
There is something deeply human about products that are built to last rather than designed to be discarded after a season.
At LeatherKart, I have always believed people should buy fewer but better-quality products. Not because it sounds good in marketing, but because I genuinely believe overconsumption has become one of the biggest problems in modern retail.
Ethics Are Personal — And That’s Okay
I don’t believe ethical conversations should become attacks on people from either side.
Some people choose vegan products, and I completely respect that.
Others choose genuine leather because they value:
- durability
- longevity
- craftsmanship
- repairability
- natural materials
What matters most, in my opinion, is awareness and conscious decision-making.
Consumers today are asking better questions:
- Where was this made?
- How long will it last?
- Is this disposable?
- Is this responsibly sourced?
- What environmental impact does this create over time?
Those are important conversations, and businesses should welcome them.
My Honest Perspective
I don’t think appreciating leather automatically means someone does not care about animals.
Many leather buyers are incredibly compassionate people who also care deeply about sustainability, reducing waste, and buying products designed to last.
The world is nuanced. Ethics are nuanced.
And perhaps the goal should not be perfection — but more thoughtful and responsible choices as consumers.
At LeatherKart, we simply believe in creating products that people can use, value, repair, and keep for years — not products designed to be thrown away after a season.
Whether someone chooses leather or vegan alternatives, I believe the most important thing is becoming a more conscious consumer overall.
